چکیده

Interest has been expressed in tracing possible sources of contamination (e.g. from human or other waste) by using compounds such as pharmaceuticals, caffeine, and sterols in waste as potential source markers. This pilot study was designed to identify and measure a limited set of compounds in aqueous environmental samples to determine possible relations between these compounds to animal and human activity. Field samples were collected quarterly for one year from three stream basins – a control stream; a stream potentially affected by concentrated swine production, and a stream potentially affected by concentrated cattle production. In addition, samples were collected from two wastewater treatment plant discharges in an urban area. Samples were analyzed for 34 organic wastewater compounds. A preliminary examination of the data suggests that caffeine, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, and diethyl phthalate, have the strongest relation to human activity.

Removal of Pharmaceutical Compounds from Hospital Wastewaters Using Nanomaterials: A Review

Over the past few years, residual pharmaceuticals (antibiotics, anticonvulsants, antipyretics drugs, hormones) have begun to be considered as emerging environmental pollutants due to their continuous input and persistence to aquatic ecosystem even at low concentrations. Therefore, the development of efficient, cost-effective, and stable methods and materials for the wastewaters treatment have g...

The occurrence of illicit and therapeutic pharmaceuticals in wastewater effluent and surface waters in Nebraska.

The occurrence and estimated concentration of twenty illicit and therapeutic pharmaceuticals and metabolites in surface waters influenced by wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharge and in wastewater effluents in Nebraska were determined using Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS). Samplers were installed in rivers upstream and downstream of treated WWTP discharge at four sites...

Recently, our attention has focused on the low level detection of many antibiotics, pharmaceuticals, and other organic chemicals in water resources. The limited studies available suggest that urban or rural streams receiving wastewater effluent are more susceptible to contamination. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of antibiotics, pharmaceuticals, and other organic chemi...
